Today, I had some great news – A short story of mine ‘Sins of the Father’ has been accepted by Clarendon House Publications.

Bright was the night that Brian Moore chose to hide up in a fisherman’s shed. A full moon so brilliant the stars lost their own luminescence, dimmed for one night only by luna glory. Looking straight at it brought water to Brian’s eyes.
Brian hopped over big walls into the gardens of houses belonging to the well-to-do of the little town. One garden to the next and then the next, in his attempt to steer clear of Sergent Hill. The punishment he had received, a few nights earlier, had been beyond cruel. Locked in an old Anderson shelter overnight with no light or water, he had messed his pants which only sent his mum into yet another rage. What did she expect? It was all her fault. She had got the policeman to punish him in the first place, and for what reason, because he didn’t like school?
What 12 year old did?
He would rather be out in the wild, than sitting in a boring classroom. He knew things about the land and the forest no teacher did. He knew the habits of badgers and birds. He could snare rabbits and skin ’em too. But no, his mum wanted him to be just like the others.
Bollocks to that.
Now she had set Sergent Hill after him again and he needed a safe place. Somewhere the fat pig wouldn’t think of looking. He made his way, in a round the houses fashion, down to the beach and climbed into an old shed. Turned the parafin heater on, and kipped down for the night in front of it.
Old Nick nudged the boy awake with the tip of his boot.
“Wake up young’un.” he said
The boy tried to dart away on his hands and knees, but Old Nick’s boot soon had him pinned to the floor.
“Sorry.” Brian yelped.
Old Nick having spent time in Japan from ’42 to ’46 recognised genuine fear when he saw it, and the pressure on the boy’s chest lessened.
“Yer not in trouble, boy. But ya owe me for breaking in and use o’ the gas.”
“I don’t have no money.”
“Best ya work yer debt off then. Help me gut some fish, and then we’ll think about mending the lock together. How about that then Moony?”
“I got to call ya something, int I” said Old Nick smiling and holding out his hand.
Brian waited a few seconds, then put his own hand forward, and they shook on it.
Deben Market, situated on the coast in East Anglia, England, is a town like any other, or is it?
It was under a dark and dangerous looking sky, six months ago, that I arrived. I swept down into the town via a steep hill with a small Norman church, surrounded by council housing on my left and large grand houses to my right. The high street had all the old world charm of a medieval town entering the twenty first century. The long main street, unpredictably called High Street, was deserted of living souls. I found my temporary home above the local florist, my car the only one to be parked in the long wide road. Ancient street lamps, cast a warm yellow light, so much more welcoming than the harsh LED lighting I was used to in London. The emptiness, old school illumination and dark thundery sky made me think God had sent a personal message ‘STRANGER BEWARE’.
The businesses are small family run affairs, with the odd scattering of larger brand shops and banks.
It’s a town I have come to admire, even though my first week or so was unpredictable and eye-opening. There is something about the town that has awakened a more sensitive side to my nature. It – I mean Deben Market – has, I think, something dark at its centre, way back in its past. Something mystical, powerful and mysterious. No I’m not being fanciful, I truly believe it because of the things I have experienced and the new nature in me those experiences have brought about.
Some of the residents I have come to know might think differently, then again they might not. Gilbert White, of White’s Family Bakers would say it’s a beautiful town, especially in the morning with the sun rising over the sea and the mist curling from the cars. Gilbert told me once he met an old friend on one of those early mornings he so loves. A friend who had been dead a long time. And I believe him.
The Pargeter’s, a family of power and influence, might describe it as the centre of their business world, although old man Pargeter, Francis, would call it his country retreat. Their money separates them from the ordinary people of the town, they have much to learn about the realities of life and death.
Monty, the old Etonian who runs Bacchus wine bar would say, “The town is so old fashioned it’s not like stepping into a picture postcard but an old masters daub coming to life.” Adding, because he is a businessman first and foremost, “Don’t forget our Sunday specials with Jazz trio Miles Nation playing third Sunday of every month in the summer.”
Moony Moore, the most interesting and outspoken resident I have met, might say “int’ like used ta be boy. Town folk used ta live here, workin’ folk, not London folk wi’ more money n sense. Is a dead town now boy. Come back n see it Winter when not a soul venture out. Not one a them lot wants best for this town, they wan’ change n not for the best neither, ya ask me.”
That’s Moony for you, straight talking salt of the earth fisherman that he is. Lived a long hard life, the best way he could. Loved a lot of people, and damaged a few that hurt the ones he cared for.
The newly arrived Catholic priest, Father Lucius, would tell you the town, and his congregation in particular, is made of a mixed bunch. Lords, ladies both rich and poor. The unemployable and the business minded. The phrase melting pot would spring to his mind. He might make a comparison Jesus’s disciples, for weren’t they taken from every layer of society? He is trying hard to be a good replacement for the priest before him who left under such a strange shadow, and is not much focused beyond the difficulties of being a religious leader in the modern world.
Lizzy, Moonys ex-wife. I wonder what she might say of this place. Good things I expect, as she came and stayed even after the marriage ended, forever to be labelled an incomer by the locals.
To return to the beginning of this entry: I can tell you from personal experience this town is not exactly haunted, but embodied or possessed. Things, small things admittedly, change or alter. People’s memories seem out of kilter. A person might pass you on the street as if you and they hadn’t been setting the world to rights the night before, over a few drinks, at the bar of the town’s most amenable drinking establishment – The Nelson.
Here is a town with a hint of other worldliness, a place out of time, and an underlying feeling of being watched, not by the buildings or the people, but by something else.
It’s difficult to put into words.
I am just a visitor, and yet I’m compelled to stay.

Imagine Alistair Byrne, the hero of my novel The Loneliness of Moony Moore. He is tall, dark and of course handsome – aren’t all heroes? He is well-spoken and well-educated, just about perfect really. But what about the not so good points? Well, he has trouble asserting himself, is shy and a bit clumsy. He’s just about penniless and although not heartbroken, is getting over a relationship (he’s been dumped for a better catch.)
While Alistair is staying in a small seaside town licking his wounds, his world is changed, yet again, by the discovery of a new talent – some might call it a curse. More on that later.
I picture him to be a modern day P.G Wodehouse character. If you know the books, think Monty Bodkin or even, dare I say it, Bertie Wooster.
Wodehouse’s characters are all brimming with confidence, even when they are in the soup, and aren’t smart enough to sort it out without the help of a manservant. It’s part of his wonderful world, nothing really gets them down, even though they are complete fatheads. By total contrast Alistair is not a blithering idiot, but is totally lacking in confidence, and a gentlemen’s gentleman for that matter too.
My book is set in the modern world, so for a start I’d have to tone down the vernac’. Chaps just don’t have that sort of turn of phrase anymore, even the clever ones. There is murder and spiritual activity in the book, so it’s going to be a hell of lot more sombre than the great man’s work.
In fact, there’s very little comedy at all. Abuse, beatings, corruption, and murder, but no comedy. I promise you, the book is not a comedy – very far from it.
So to recap, Alistair is a slightly clumsy, shy, non-assertive, and not forgetting poor, but well spoken – although he lacks the confidence to say anything – terrible good looking, Oxford graduate who finds himself in the middle of murder mystery where the dead have a habit of confiding in him.
When I think about it, Alistair and my book have very little to do with Wodehouse, I just like reading his magic and I wanted to say so here.
A few days ago, I submitted a piece of flash fiction to an editor. 1500 words to be proofread and content edited. Why, you might ask, would one want an editor to look at such a short piece of fiction?
If anyone is interested in finding a professional editor at reasonable rates I can highly recommend Cat Chester at pinkproof – she was fast and very professional. Her feedback encouraged as well as corrected. As I said to her afterwards, I felt like I was handing in my homework for a school project, I was very nervous about what she would say. I shouldn’t have been, a more helpful and supportive experience I couldn’t have hoped for. I wish my school teachers could have been half this helpful.
I have asked her to look at another short fiction today, and wait with baited breathe for her observations.
I wanted to write a book, that’s all. Just write a book. The need had been mulling around in my head for sometime, so I bit the bullet and started last year around May or June.
I did what a lot of first timers do – I read books by famous authors including P.D James, Elmore Leonard and of course Stephen King’s “On Writing” and thought I can at least try. Not that I thought I could be as good as P.D James or as successful as Stephen King, but I had to be better than some of the guff that I’ve seen printed.
I started the first book set in world devastated by a virus, a space virus, (no Zombies or mutant Vampires – yet). Just ordinary people struggling with a suddenly changed world. But it was taking time, time I found hard to find. Then I found out about NaNoWriMo, and thought it sounded like a grand idea. I signed up, left the first book half finished and began a new one with no idea at all of what was to happen. I made names up as I went along, I invented a fictional town. And just kept on typing. I hit the target of 50,000 words with a couple of days spare – whoop whoop!
That was when the hard work of sifting through all the guff I had written began. It was mixed up and jumbled, like a jigsaw puzzle in a thousand pieces and I had no idea of the final image. Now with Christmas over and a new year well underway, I still don’t have the complete picture, although it is much clearer.
The main story is there, but the detail is missing.
The town I created had to have a population, and people had to be somewhere. So I invented jobs to occupy them during the day and houses for them to in sleep in at night. Not to mention shops and businesses. Soon I needed a map, the map needed street names. I needed more detail. Shops had to have addresses. Even more detail was needed, the inside of shops and homes had to be imagined. Why? After all, most of them won’t appear in the book. Because I had to see what my protagonist is seeing, if he’s looking out the window, and looking at the Post Office which is next to the bakers, and thinking about the lady who runs said Post Office, I can’t very well a few chapters later have the PO on the other side of the street next to an Estate Agents can I? And the lady in the PO needs a character, and relationships. She may only be a very minor character in my story, but her life is very important to her.
In order to try to see the town and some of the inhabitants, that weren’t in the book, I wrote a piece of flash fiction. 1500 words and I asked an editor to take a look. She was very encouraging, and I am indebted to Cat at pinkproof for all her help. More short stories will no doubt emerge as I try to get to grips with my town and the people who inhabit it.
I really thought writing a book would be straight forward. Not easy or simple, but straight forward. How wrong was I?

I designed it from one of my original photographs a few weeks ago and feel able to share it now. I wanted something that suggested ghostliness, without being too obvious.
The image is my own, taken a few years ago when I was dabbling in photography with a Nikon D90. Amazing what some burning incense and a glossy background can do.
The website Canva helped me bring it all together. A great website with plenty of templates to get you started. Paid images can be purchased to improve your design or as I did you can add your own.
The novel itself is going through it’s first edit. A daunting task that requires fleshing out the bones of the story and rearranging the time line. I hope to have around sixty thousand words by the time it’s ready. The main difficulty being that I have slowed down considerably what with the approach of Christmas and the end of NaNoWriMo.
The novel is the story of the good life of Moony Moore, the bad things people do, the nature of the dead, and the patterns of life.
